I was sitting by the water bath in my yard when a pair of birds landed on the rim. One was blue, the other a deep reddish-maroon. I watched them for a long time, the way they looked at each other, the way the flowers swayed around them. I wanted to keep that feeling, the way love shows up in small, ordinary moments like that.
The piece is bright and full. A yellow ground fills the center, and the birds sit in the middle of it, surrounded by green leaves and little pink and white blossoms. The blue bird faces the maroon one, wings spread, like they are in the middle of a conversation. Around the edges, a border of small white flowers and deep red curves frames the whole scene. It feels alive, busy in a good way, like the garden never stopped moving.
