The Shore

This is an Icelandic beach, where the sand is black and the sea is grey. The iridescent stones scattered across the bottom of the piece stand in for broken ice, catching the light in small, cool flashes. It is a quiet scene, one that asks the viewer to stand still and listen to the water.

The upper half of the work is dominated by the churning, pale water, moving toward the dark shoreline. The contrast between the cold blue-grey of the sea and the deep black of the sand creates a heavy, grounded feeling. Those small, shimmering fragments of color break up the darkness, suggesting the beauty that can be found even in the coldest places.
