A manta ray passes over the sand, the moment when the water is clear enough to see the dark shape moving beneath the surface. That quiet, gliding motion is what drew me to make this piece, and I hoped to keep the calm of that underwater scene in the way the two rays sit in the pale green water.
The surface has a soft, shimmering quality that catches the light, and the white sand below looks rough and real, like a beach seen from above. The rays are small against the wide space, which makes the whole piece feel open and quiet, like a still moment in the ocean.
